Testimony of HealingNEVER SEPARATED FROM LOVEA few years ago, there was a lump on my leg that was large enough to be noticeable through my clothes. The lump had been growing and hardening, until one day I couldn't ignore it any longer. Something had to be done. And since I'd experienced many healings through prayer, I chose to pray for healing. Mary Baker Eddy pointed out the mental nature of disease in her book Science and Health, and so I prayed for God to reveal what condition of thought this situation could represent. Tumors are considered to be masses of cells that seem to arise independent of the body's structure—in other words, a kind of separation from what is normal and good. This related to how I was feeling. My husband had recently passed on, and I felt separated from his companionship and guidance. I was also having trouble thinking of myself as someone to be valued and loved. And I felt separated from God. I knew these downgrading feelings were lies needing to be corrected. As a Christian Scientist, I accepted that God is my Maker; that the Bible tells me God is my husband (see Isa. 54:5). And I knew I could never be separated from God's love. I'm spiritual, made in God's image. My purpose is to express His nature. These healing concepts are true for everyone. In Science and Health, Mary Baker Eddy provided many synonyms for God. I found this list helpful as I was praying for healing: "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love" (p. 465). Mrs. Eddy also counseled students of her book to affirm in their prayers that because God is perfect, His creation, man—and that includes women and children, too—is also perfect. As I prayed, I thought deeply about each synonym in the list and how the perfect sense of God is expressed in a perfect sense of man. As perfect Mind, God certainly couldn't have ideas of imperfection. Because Mind is also Spirit, it is uncontaminated by matter and would never create anything that could be deformed or capable of being called mortal man. Divine Mind has to be expressed in intelligent being, governed by infinite Principle. As the expression of God, each of us is the child of divine Spirit and is under the control of a loving Principle. Under God's government, no disease can arise, because nothing can be outside infinite Mind, which is always good. As God's much-loved creation, each of us is deeply loved and able to feel divine Love's presence. Certainly we are all valued, because we are God's creation. A warm and cozy sense of being embraced in love came over me. I continued to feel this permanent, all-satisfying love, until I went to sleep for the night. When I wakened the next morning, the lump had disappeared completely. The feelings of separation from my husband and from God had disappeared as well. What had seemed a void of companionship, and a feeling of not being valued and loved by God, was filled with love—and has remained that way. The skin on my leg is now perfectly smooth, and there is no evidence a lump was ever there. I'm so grateful! Verta Driver Reprinted with permission from the Christian Science Sentinel |
